I have had optus roaming for years and every trip when I land overseas it tells me how much it will cost for calls and texts. I only use it for family to text me. I use a sim card for all other calls. Take my travel phone for the sim card. Calls last trip from memory were about $1 a min. Years ago it use to be $6 a min plus the connection fee.
