Fractured my L1 in Bali 2.5 years ago. Treated in BIMC. Travel insurance were fully advised off the bat and covered all o/seas medical costs. Cleared fit to fly but reqd. room to move. Travel insurance would not cover cost of business class upgrade though as they hadn't fully investigated the claim. Said I would have to pay for an upgrade and claim back later, if full claim was accepted (which it later was). I had an exit row anyway so just dosed up on my meds and crashed most of the trip back.

A neck injury is another kettle of fish though. One false move can be disastrous (probably hence the apprehension re- fit to fly). Both require many months to heal.

You will get immensely better neurosurgeon aftercare (such as proper spinal and neck braces) in Australia.

My advise is to ride the BIMC doctor for a specific letter for your insurer and then ride your insurer to repatriate you back (of cleared). It is about risk management and minimising payouts for the insurer. They may choose for you to come back ASAP as on-going accom. and care costs in Bali maybe astronomical. My travel insurance ceased when I touched Aussie soil.

Good luck.

PS BIMC was ultra modern and clean anyway.
