The BTF operated without the "eom" thing for many years, quite successfully, even when internet access was slow. The flat file format of the forum ensures that pages load quite quickly compared with a lot of sites, even with slow connections.
EOM is something to use if you feel the need, but it's rot to claim that it makes a significant difference to speed and bandwidth.
