I had an interesting conversation last holiday with a family I always buy paintings from beside the Ubud market. They live on the edge of the market, that little road that runs back and has lots of painting shops in it. They said that long ago the government took village land to build the market. Now they were getting the land back, and they were very happy because closing off that end of the road with the market stalls meant that the road was cut off for when they took their dead to the temple, eg no longer a straight thoroughfare. I grasped that was important, but not why, but maybe the straightest journey is important, rather than going 'round the block'
