Have been back from Bali for a few days now and I would like to warn everyone about my experience.

I have been long going to Bali with my family and freinds now for the past 11 years without a hitch, this was all about to change. 4 days into our holiday my 22 year old Daughter starts feeling unwell and has lost her appetite, this is very unusual for her she is a fitness fanatic who works out in the Gym and runs about 10k daily, on day 6 she is still not well Headaches, tiredness, still no appetite so I ask one of the ex pats staying at the hotel for his advise, after asking my daughter the symptoms he suggests a blood test (In the mean time we find out that my daughter has been beeding from her mouth for the past 2 days) off we go to the clinic in Kuta and the blood tests confirm she has Dengue fever and her blood plate levels have dropped to 50. We immediately take her to the BIMC hospital who book her in straight away with a $1000 deposit we had to pay up front as surety the insurance company agrees to pay. She was in hospital for 4 days and nights, @$550.00/night without any other charges included, thank goodness we had travel insurance who paid the entire hospital bill less my excess of $200.00.

We then had to wait until my Daughters Blood plate level had come up to 80+ before she was allowed to fly home which brings me to the next issue trying to change our flights, what a nightmare, firstly, Jetstar wouldnt credit our return flight even though I contacted them explained the situation and I even suggested they sell our seats, they couldnt care less if I have to change my flights they were going to charge me $585 per person, so unreasonable. Out of principle there was no way I was going to do this so I hand-balled it back to the travel insurance Co who handled it all once I got the doctors clearance that my daughter could fly home.

BIMC was fantastic, the care shown to my daughter was in my opinion better than any hospital here in Melbourne, the receptionist right throgh to the treating Doctor was fantastic.

The insurance Co was terrific, a little bit difficult to get a hold of the last person you were talking to at times but handled our case very effeciently.

The resort we were staying at were very understanding and even made a suprise visit to the hospital one day to see how my daughter was and presented her with a lovely card and a basket of fruit. We had to stay another 3 days longer than we initially had booked, but nothing was to much trouble for them.

BTW, while I was visiting with my Daughter over the 4 days at BIMC the amount of young girls who were being admitted for broken bones loss of skin was very frightning, all of these accidents were motor bike related, there were also 2 seperate young girls admitted while I was there for Methonol poisoning.

After this experience my advise to all would be travellers is to take out travel insurance, read your policy to make sure it covers you for everything you want to do on your holidays.

Thanks Woodsman
