I don't even write to the kids I sponsor through world vision because I hate the idea of them being expected to write back to the rich white people to demonstrate gratitude for things that should be their birth right. (Yes, that probably means world vision was a dumb choice for me but I didn't know much about other options when I started donating to charity).
Using people poorer than yourself to make yourself feel lucky - or benevolent - is gross.
