I bought my kindle from Dick Smith last year before a trip to Thailand and Laos, and resisted spending the $$$ on a good cover. I bought a cheap jacket for it, and the screen cracked while it was in my bag. It was such a drag as it meant no books to read for the remainder of my holiday.

When I got back to Australia I contacted Amazon and they replaced my Kindle for free (including free freight), which I thought was really excellent.

I also bought a kindle cover with light from Amazon, which is not cheap but well worth it. I use the kindle all the time, and the light is so handy for reading at night as the screen is not backlit.

I recommend you don't try going the cheap option, bite the bullet and get the Amazon cover, it is worth it. Not much more than a couple of paperback books cost and it will last you for years
