I've been travelling to Indonesia for over 30 years, I've lived in Indonesia, at one point commuting to Australia to work. I must have entered and exited the country 50 or 60 times at least. Not once, have I EVER had an immigration official try to 'supplement' their income due to coming close to dates (or for any reason for that matter). I have left the country many times on the last valid day of my visa, and while it has been commented on, the passport was stamped and there were no problems.
I really do think people perpetuate some of this stuff through rumour and not through direct experience. The only time I know of where people have had to pay has been when they broke the rules. Even then, sometimes I believe there is an incorrect interpretation around what is a bribe and what is actually a sanctioned discretionary fine.
There is absolutely NO POINT in renewing your passport so that you have 6 months left when you finish your holiday in Indonesia, it is not required, so not even as a 'just in case'.
When you leave a country there is no assumption you are returning to your home country. You could very well be heading off somewhere else next. How much validity you have on your passport is not their concern as long as it is valid for their rules. Which if it had 6 months on arrival, and the passport has not expired as yet, it is valid.
