A friend has done this with people she helps in Africa.
She uses the Commonwealth Bank travel card; they give you two cards and you can load money into the account. I'm not entirely sure of all the costs....1% of the amount you put in plus the ATM fee; but it costs her much less than the bank fees for transferring the money.
The bank does not approve of you doing this so best not to tell them. Just give the spare card to your friends along with the PIN.
Worth having a look at....other banks have similar travel cards.
