i wouldnt pay too much attention to the money changers advice. If they only change say $100 they might be worse off my around $2 or $3 at the airport compared to Kuta rates... at the same time, they may easily get ripped off in Kuta and therefore be much better off in the airport.

Personally - i'd say use a debit card and you havent got to worry about rates or getting ripped off. But.. airport changers are perfectly trustable in my experience, all are the same rate and they wont scam you. They cant afford to as they will be out on their ear.
