The over the limit amount the total amount including your allowance will be subject to both local duty and other taxes. If you dont want to pay the tax the entire amount will be confiscated and held for 3 months at which time you can claim them back when leaving the country or they are destroyed
New rules will be 50 cigarettes per person,so if buying overseas you will need to split one pack of 20 lol 2 and a half packs per person!
Entering Sydney 2 weeks ago from USA I ticked YES to more than 250 cigarettes and was waived through.
In US 3 cartons of 200 cigarettes cost me $54 US Dollars total Duty free the same in Australian Duty free would have cost closer to $300
The new limit would be more about tax loss than health.
With Australian prices of almost 4 times that of other countries they are trying to stop the rampant smuggling of tobacco products that have cropped up over the past few years.
I have a local Deli that sells cheap Chinese smokes for $4 per pack under the counter.
Tobacco smuggling will be as rife as in The UK pretty soon.
Lots of Australian non smokers are bringing back their limit of tobacco and selling it on at a small profit because its worth it now.
