I carry pepper spray with me when I travel. it shoots 8 feet away and makes it impossible for the person to see for about 45 minutes. it also makes it a little difficult to breath. Mace is a brand name for pepper spray. these sprays are actually made with the chemical in hot peppers that make them hot. i also fee safer carrying that for the dogs I encounter. i have been carrying it for 2 years now while living abroad including 8 trips to Bali. i can say i have not had once instance where i used it or felt close to using it on a person. i did have it in my hand and came relatively close to using on a dog in a deserted area at night that was right at my feet and growling but it didn't come to that.
better than the spray actually is gel or foam. they shoot farther and you won't spray yourself if there is wind, you wont get residue pepper spray on yourself. i tested my pepper spray once and it lingers a long time in the air and can affect you a little. the gel and foam also liquefy and stay on the person more.
there are some gels that are a combination of pepper spray/ tear gas chemical and a chemical that stains the person so they glow purple under untraviolet light for a week or two. that would make it easier for police to identify. :)
