I am pretty fine with small crossings on small boats but some that leave Bali for both Gilis and Lombok I doubt they would pass safety requirements.
peoples experience have been different,my both crossings were full speed with the speedboat hitting the waves so hard it felt like the boat was going to break in half,I made sure i sat at the far rear for a speedy exit(in the unlikely event of) i even counted the life jackets that were less than passengers :(
I am not a whoos but Bali to Gilis/lombok is the only crossing I have done to an Island I would think twice about doing again. I think mainly because you are going into open seas on a small boat.
It would be a pain but much better to fly in my opinion
