the boat safety is not really answerable. They are all safe until they go down and then you never see that boat again. The boats are often overloaded, not always well equipped with enough safety devices and the Lombok Strait is notoriously dangerous. You take a risk traveling that stretch by boat. Many people, myself included, have traveled the route safely many times. Ironically though, I used to travel with the Eka Jaya and we all know what happened to that boat!
The safest way is to fly to Lombok and take a boat from there.
