As you'r going in December you might be up for a rough boatride if you choose the fast boat option. There tends to be big waves from September - April (rainy season).
Fly over, take the airport bus to Senggigi (25.000Rp). Stay one night. In Senggigi go to "Dream Divers" shop on the main street and buy a ticket to Gili Trawangan. They pick up at your hotel, drive you to Ternare where they have there boat waiting. The boatride to Gili T takes 20 minutes. This is a really good way to do it. Dream Divers are very reliable. Cost $US 8/person one way.
