Try Tegal Sari, or Greenfields, both walking distance to Monkey forrest Road and great location. They have a shuttle bus if u find it to far to walk with the children, which u can just call up, free.
Dont worry to much about walking around at night by 7ish most of the shops are closed and the resturants stay open and thats about it.
Markets with the children, would probably be a nightmare. Great location, to safari park, Elephant Park, Kintamandi, Hot Springs, Rice Fields, Bali Bike Tour, White Water Rafting. Enjoy
