Bali is generally safe for foreigners, but please educate yourself about possible risks before travelling. The attacks on Kuta and the Australian embassy in Jakarta were not accidental or "because they hate Aussies because of their freedom etc".
Australia's support for the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the continuing occupation of Palestine by Israel, has upset some of the more extreme elements of political Islam in Indonesia.
Whatever you think about the politics behind it all, the simple fact remains that identifying yourself as an Australian makes you an obvious target, and congregating in large numbers with fellow Australian tourists just increases the risk (however small) of being targeted.
