my suggestion would be to do a Wotif, lastminutedotcom or similar booking and check in somewhere in town. Have a nice dinner, good rest and head to the airport allowing at least two hours before departure time.
Middle of the night, early hours of the morning is the busiest time at Darwin airport however having done this flight on AA last christmas we arrived at the airport at 3am and had no problems. we live in the city and it takes approximately 20 minutes from city to the airport.
