Earlier in the year I was in Bali and with the benefit of hindsight I now realise that I was far too relaxed about this (I rode around on the back of scooters without a helmet & I have no idea if the they were licensed or not - eek).
I am off to Bali again in a couple of month's time and I have checked with my travel insurance company (1Cover) exactly what I need to do in order to be covered if an accident should occur... (touch wood!)

- to be covered as a passenger the driver must be licensed in Indonesia, the motorbike/scooter must be registered and you must be wearing a helmet.
- to be covered as a rider of a motorbike you must have a current Australian motorbike licence, the bike must be registered and you must be wearing a helmet.
- to be covered as a rider of a scooter you must have a current Australian drivers licence, the scooter must be registered and you must be wearing a helmet.
Basically if you have an accident they will not cover you if you are breaking any laws.
One thing I forgot to ask (I might send them another email to check) is if I need to have an International licence to ride a scooter? They only mentioned an Australian drivers licence...
As it only costs $30-odd to apply for an International licence it might be best for me to get one before I go? I have read on the forum about people being pulled over by the Police, so if not for travel insurance purposes, an International licence might save me a bribe or two?!
