What area are you staying and what kind of music do you like? Also do you want to go out in singlet, boardies, thongs or dress up a bit Potato Head/KuDeTa style?
In Kuta 10pm would still be too early for many clubs. Most of the party animals would be having a late dinner or having predrinks somewhere like Espresso Bar or getting into the duty free. Espresso Bar is great place to start the night, good atmosphere. Eikon is another option for predrinks cheap Mint Mojitos, Long Island Iced Teas but more R&B music less Bule Bintang singlet crowd.
Although you can make well use of the clubs early Happy Hour buy one get one free or cheap drinks while it's quiet at places like Engine Room, MBargo, Skygarden, Paddies or Bounty Ship.
I've found Seminyak seems to kick off even later than Kuta nightlife. Will normally hit up Seminyak after 2am. Weekend in Seminyak also tend to be busier. Kuta always pumping. La Planca is a bit different option on the beach, beach party on Friday nights.
