Have just been through it 7 weeks ago. You must have an International Driving Permit. These are available in Australia from your State Motoring Association. Cost for us in South Aust $30 each. They are valid for 12 months. Strongly suggest you get one before you go. After checking with my Insurance Co, they stated that if either of us were injured, we would not be covered for any medical expenses whatsoever.
The police are very hot a.t.m. on foreigners who DO NOT; 1). Have a valid International Driving Permit. 2). Don't wear safety helmets. and 3). You must drive with your headlight on at all times (a big one a.t.m.). Some of the road laws have recently been upgraded or enforced. There is an article in the Forum Archives some months ago ref the Road Law updates. Suggest also, that you make sure you check the International Driving Permit carefully before you leave the Motoring Office. We didn't until we got to Bali and found out to our cost (in IDR), and inconvenience that our permits covered driving cars BUT had NOT been endorsed for riding motor cycles! Very expensive for us when the Copper pointed it out to us at a road block . Rp 200,000 each!! Plus, as we had rented the bikes for 2 weeks, we "lost" our deposits too!! Gotta love it !! Question for you ... WHY would you ride a motor cycle without wearing a helmet??
