luckily I followed the routine with my 4 year old. I use insect repellent morning and night, wear light coloured clothing, don't use perfume, etc. After countless trips to Bali over the last 25 years, came back with Dengue in June 2010. Only received two mozzie bites - one in Sanur and one in Ubud. I didn't use repellent as soon as I woke up (I did luckily spray my son's clothes and dabbed him though). Think I was bitten both times first thing in the morning in the bathroom, but don't know for sure. On future trips I plan on rolling straight out of bed and rolling the repellent straight on!!!
