I went through something similar but not as tragic with 4 tickets. There was much communication back and forth and reclaiming the tax was suggested, but by the time Jetstar were to take out their handling fee it wasn't worth it (these were domestic tickets) - we let the whole thing drop and a week after we did a no show on the scheduled flights we received notification by email of full refunds. Go figure! It appeared that having had it flagged that we could not make the flights due to circumstances beyond our control the system refunded them on a no show. At no time did they suggest that would happen.
