How many people pay the "on the dot" amount for meals, bar bills, taxi rides and pretty much any instance where money is paid for services provided?
Of course there is a "culture" of tipping in Bali.
Because of the generally small amounts of money involved in the transactions it is quite normal for customers to leave a few thousand rupe, even if only as recognition of the generally poor wages paid to the service providers.
I actually lash out a bit, and give a tip dependant on the value of the service AND throw in a couple of lavish recommendations.
I generally find that the recommendations work out quite cheap.
I sometimes even go back for more.....but then I'm such a soft touch.
