I have heard - I don't know if folklore or true - that the Balinese believe a kitten will not stray if you dock its tail and bury it (the tail, that is!) at the front door.
And I think the ones that have a tail just genetically have a kink as they are related to the Siamese cat. (The folklore story behind that is that, way back when, that is where the King kept his ring, as he could only trust his cat. Subsequent cats bore the mark as a sign they could be trusted).
