I just spent a few weeks working in Africa, and normally I get bitten alive, but by following a few simple measures I didn't get any bites.
Anything with DEET is good to keep the mozzies away. I used a combination of tropical strength Rid and the 80% DEET bushman's but found that a little irritating to my skin so make sure you try it at home before you go. If you have senstive skin, take a child strength mozzie repellant for your face.
If you are especially worried about mozzie bites, there is an insect repellant stuff you can soak your clothes in which keeps the bugs away. it's called bug away and it costs about $20 from camping shops.
I've also heard vitamin B tablets repel mozzies naturally but can't find any research to back it up, but a few friends swear by it. There are a lot of natural remedies on the market, but I'd only trust stuff with DEET in it.
Take some Raid with you to spray your room, and keep the aircon/fans on.
