in Vietnam can be very uncomfortable, unhygienic and some times dangerous.
There have been many stories about people being robbed, happened to friends of mine!
I would fly or catch a tour bus.
There are sleeping tour buses that are decked out with bunks and pick you up at your hotel.

WE are flying from HCMC to Danang then catching buses slowly coming back to HCMC via the coastline.
Only stopping of at Vung Tau for old time sake, 6 Vietnam Vets in our party were staioned in and around there.
I did many a trip up the Mekong from Vung Tau to HCMC(Saigon) in 1968 but this time catching a hydrofoil.
If you haven'y already done so look at Tripadvisor forums etc for more advice on Vietnam.
As for cheap hotels we are staying in 3 star hotels all averaging around $50 a night per room but sometimes the hotels conversion rates leave a lot to be desired. Hence the $US.
