Motorcycle helmets as hand luggage

You seem like a well traveled lot, can anyone tell me if they will allow a motor bike helmet on the plane as hand luggage, have had conflicting reports from other travelers and have searched the Govt. Regs, but all I can find is certain sporting equipment is a no-no, but it doesn't say what, anyone ????????
