A lot of the cheap kettles for sale are the soft plastic- the kind loaded with BPA, a chemical that leaches out and that people are to avoid. Some of the hotels are using these for coffee/tea making corners to replace the older hard plastic ones but the water tastes so "chemically" that you know it is not safe. We bought a stainless steel one at Carrefor and just leave it in a box of "annual useables" that we store at a friend's.
