The damage of course is to the infrastructure that cannot cope in any way with the growth of development that is happening.
Anywhere would struggle to cope with such an influx of tourists, investors, ex pats and trans migratory people searching for the Rupe.
You are right about those local areas...the tourist strips are really very thin veneers.
The immediate practical challenges are electricity, water, traffic management, sewerage, and rubbish disposal....not neccesarily in that order.
It is fantastic to see the Balinese steadfastly going about their spiritual and traditional business in spite of the train wreck that in some cases seems to be developing around them.
