We flew Virgin Blue (or whatever they call themselves overseas) direct to Adelaide. We were 8kg over and were not charged for it. I had heard a while ago that if you check in early you have more chance of not paying for your overweight luggage so we always check in as soon as the counter opens and have never paid - could just be luck though!
I have heard that Garuda is the same as the others - sometimes you will pay and sometimes you won't!
