Take your mobile phone with you, it has to be an unlocked phone, you can check this by inserting someone else's sim card in so if you are optus put in a telstra one or virgin or vodaphone or whatever, if the phone works then it is unlocked. You can ask your carrier to unlock your phone for you for a cost.
Once in Bali go into any of the little phone booth/shops/stalls. Ask for a sim card to phone/text Australia the best. They will sell you the one that currently is working the best for Australia, can be Proxl, Mentari or whatever, some on here will reccomend one over another but I really beleive it has a lot to do with the weather and the time of the day and who you are calling/texting for the best one.
The guys/gals in the shop will set your phone up for you, in English, ask for the cheap area codes and the credit check number. Start with about 50,000 credit and see how you go, some it can last for the whole holiday others spend heaps more all depends on what you are doing with it. Any questions ask the guys in the shop.
