but I have never had to pay, I have always been able to talk my way around it... Most of the checkin staff are fairly accommodating (at least from my experience) I have at one point arrived home with 3 times the luggage limit with not a cent to pay, lucky I guess and no, I don't pay for the benefit.
I should mention that you may experience difficulty if you are not flying direct. A friend of mine got out of Bali ok,but then encountered troule in Sydney before flying on to Melbourne.
