By boat or by plane to the Gilis????

In September we want to travel from Sanur to Gili Trawangan with our 3 yr old son. I try to figure out if it is best to go by fast boat or by plane to Lombok and then by boat. If we would have travelled without our son, we definately would go by boat, but I do not know if the boat trip will be very bumpy for a 3 yr old????

a) Go by Gili Cat? From Padang Bai. 1,5 hours by sea

b) Go by plane to Mataram, Lombok. Go by taxi to Taluk Nara for example and take a speed boat 15 minutes to Gili T.

Prices are pretty much the same...

Does anyone has good experiences with Merpati? Or should we go with Garuda (with regards to safety)?
