to find hotels in the particular area I want to stay in. Hotels are usually listed in order of popularity & also show rough prices that rooms start at so you know whether it may be within your budget or not. I read a few reviews to get an idea of what people think of the place, then google the hotel name, check out their website & contact them direct for a rate. I have found several times that the "internet rate" shown on a hotel's website is more expensive than the rate quoted when you email them direct so don't just book online without emailing them first.

Also make sure to do your research - see what prices are offered on various accommodation websites & don't just assume the hotel will offer you their best price. If the hotel price is more than offered elsewhere, let them know - they will often match the price & you avoid the booking fee you may have to pay with wot if etc.
