Perth to Bali to Kl to Phuket, so only had one way tickets to each destination. We travelled with Air Asia and never once got asked to show our return tickets.
We have also travelled peth to bali return but using 2 different airlines (Jetstar & air asia and air asia and ozjet), again we were not asked to show a return ticket.
Maybe it depends on the airline.
