I do a lot of walking in Bali so I think Seminyak is close to Legian.
Its essentially all Kuta but it goes - Kuta - Legian - Seminyak.
Probably 3 km from Kuta square to Jl. Dhyana Pura Seminyak.
Jl. Oberoi probably has the best restuarants and there are more upmarket boutiques in seminyak. Depends what you want but I prefer seminyak. Apart from Jl. Dhyana pura where there are heaps of bars (big gay scene and more of a euro scene) and this goes off on weekends there are more shops open in Kuta/Legian. There are some good maps online so you should check it out.
