The $1000 limit is not the point, as it actually doesn't apply in quite the same way for goods with you.
ANYTHING deemed to be in a commercial quantity is eligible for the necessary taxes and duties. Occasionally an officer will waive those, but in most cases you'll have to pay the duties applicable. All you need to do is to declare them, to keep the relevant documentation, and the customs officers will work your the relevant rate. You really did get off lightly, believe me, even if it doesn't feel like it.
I would suggest that it's not too wise to post on an open forum that your kids are selling off their 'genuine' bali copies.
