I believe that the Tourist Visa is only valid for maximum 60 days and is not extendable...
The Social Cultural Visa is for a period of 60 days and extensions are available..
There is no problem with leaving the country to say Singapore and returning the same day, but as Rangatira mentioned the minute you arrive and have your passport stamped, its considered day 1 even if its close to midnight..
