I had a similar incident where virgin changed my stepsons flights from NZ to Sydney to meet up with us then fly onto Bali.
I kept stressing Virgin had changed the flight times not me! They are allowed to change these flights (in small print) but if it means your friend was having a stopover (not just a few hours but overnight) in Bris to visit her daughter then no it's not acceptable.
I ended up getting a credit to the full value less $10 credit card fee. Make sure she checks out what other flights are available with any airline to get to Brissy before cancelling with Virgin flight as it is a busy time & the new price might not be worth it.
