Im a customs officer and the correct (and safe) thing to do is NOT take the bag through. Your imcoming passenger card is your declaration that you own and know what is in the baggage that you carry through with you . The lone bag will go through as unaccompaied baggage and the owner can then claim it !! Enjoyed your post, sounds like you all had a great holiday.
