to this question because it is down to the persons who are clearing your luggage on the day to make a call, and this can be inconsistent.
I have shipped fragile stuff like this by measuring, and then just go to a small cabinet/furniture maker and get them to cut ply to fit.
A bit of newspaper and duct tape, and voilla, into check in luggage it goes!!
You could even ask a local to get a piece for you for a few thousand rupe.
Of course, clear plastic frame insert instead of glass would be a much better option for shipping if not for looking at.
