My hubby, 3yo & I stayed at Balian during our 3 week trip over Xmas/New Year & loved the laid back, relaxed vibe, scenery, peace & quiet. Balian is a surf beach so we visited for my husband's sake but I loved our 5 days there just as much as he did. Balian Breezes was our choice of accommodation & we could not fault it, fantastic value for money.
We followed our stay at Balian with a week in Sanur at the Villa Puri Ayu (not beach front but only a very short walk away). Having a young child, we prefer to have separate living/sleeping areas & they have some good options for around or less than AU$100 per night. Sanur is much easier to push a stroller around than Kuta/Legian/Seminyak which was also a big plus. Great path along the beachfront for walking with the stroller or you can hire a bike with a babyseat if you prefer to cycle. Sanur has lots of great, casual beachfront restaurants where you can eat a meal while your little plays in the sand. You could be lucky like us & actually get to eat your meal without interruption if you take along bucket, spade etc! :o)
