Virtually all laptops sold in the last ten years have built in WiFi.
I have seen an American fellow, using Skype upstairs in Gloria Jeans in Kuta. They give you the password when you buy a cup of coffee. When you switch on your laptop, a message should appear asking if you want to connect to their WiFi. Just enter the password and you are away.
The internet cafes in Kuta also allow Skype.
Unless you have a headset with a microphone of a plug in phone that looks like a mobile phone, you will end up speaking to the microphone in the lid of the laptop and listening to your caller through the laptop speakers. It looks very uncool. Buy a headset before you leave.
