My Nephew came back from Bali 12 days ago and was diagnosed with Dengue Fever. He hasa just come back from the doctor and this is his message to me which I thought was interesting.
just to update you; i had another appointment with the doctor yesterday to discuss my blood tests from last week. Both positive for dengue (luckily not the haemorrhagic strain) and my platelets are still well down - there was improvement from the 1st to 2nd blood tests though. I have another blood test next friday and will meet the doc again the following week to see where im at. They have to continue to monitor me until my blood is back to normal - after which they can give me the all clear.
So what this means is whilst i dont feel particularly sick or feverish anymore, im just constantly really tired and just dont feel 'right'. Doc said it will still be at least a few weeks until im feeling normal again and that im lucky that im young and fit as i will battle it better than most. I'm not supposed to drink alcohol or do intense physical activity and I have to drink plenty of water until my blood gets back to normal, and obviously try not to bleed - so semi out of action until atleast week after next when i get the next blood test back.
Apparently its only the females of 2 species of mosquito which carry the virus and they only feed during the day. You cannot be vaccinated for dengue, you can only try and prevent being bitten. Doc said that if i am infected again it will be worse each time and that I run a higher risk of contracting the haemorrhagic strain....... so i think i might use some mosi repellent next time im in a tropical area!!!
