I agree in some cases dengue fever can be extremely serious indeed. However, bear in mind that only about 5% of people infected (bitten) with dengue fever actually show any symptoms. Studies show that 55% of the population of Singapore have been infected with the virus and over 95% of the Vietnamese population similarly infected, yet very few present with symptoms. Experts in this disease from Singapore do not not why some people react and the vast majority of people don't.
By all means, take precautions, but do not overly worry - the odds are largely in your favour.
