Hi Deb, from personal experience, reading my travel insurance policy and past posts on this forum it appears that the situation is as follows:
Whilst you are permitted to ride up to 50cc scooters on a normal car drivers license in Aust (well, in WA anyway), this DOES NOT cover you in Bali. In any event, I cant recall having seen 50cc or less scooters in Bali.
For travel insurance purposes, your policy document is your friend! There is no alternative but to read it and if unclear, contact your insurer and ask. Many policies say things like "must have a license valid in that country.....". If so, it may be possible to obtain a local licence and be covered - again, when in doubt, ask your insurer.
Other policies require a motorbike license in Aust AND an international driving permit.
I think the key points are 1. no up to 50cc "license" based on Aust license and 2. check your policy wording for what is required in your circumstances (which may differ from those of others).
