I don't stay over Tuban/kuta but whenever we go there for shopping/waterbom we eat at Cafe batan Waru which is opposite waterbom on the main street.
It is indonesian with fusion style also available. they also have a number of places in Ubud
which are fabulous - don't bother if you want schnitzel and heavy Oz food. Their mocktails are the best especially with mint ginger and lime.
DVD shops are everywhere - try to buy ones that have been officially released as DVDs or you might find a few heads appearing on screen.
Shopping
For womens clothes it depends what you are after - a lot of the stuff is very casual/beachwear - great for cheap pressies but poor quality if your after clothing that is fashionable/stylish. The best place to shop for women's clothes is Seminyak (a short taxi fare away) or if your after something else try Sanur.
Animale used to excellent but their prices are ridiculous and most of their stuff is too bizarre for words. The outlet at seminyak is better value and you could eat at many of the great cafes/restaurants there.
check out balieats wesite - it has the full range of prices and styles in regions.
Most of the clothes for women in Matahari's are suitable only for dog fights but men's are excellent.
centro has clothing that might suit if you are a smaller size 8-12 but bigger than that could be a problem. Centro also had a footlocker outlet when we were there last year and I picked up excellent bargains in Converse and other brands.
My best advice is not to buy ANYTHING on the first day. it costs nothing to get a price from a number of street vendors think/compare and go back to bargain some more.
Hope this helps
