After two days you have the hang of it - and so do the vendors. We found that our polite no thankyous (seemed like at least 10 a minute) became a bit of a joke with the vendors that we walked past each day. They ended up just saying "no thankyou" to us as we walked past instead of trying to sell.
I watched other tourists who just totally ignored them - and I thought it was so rude. They are only trying to make a living after all, and they don't have the benefit of any social security to back them up.
Must say - I enjoyed seeing a couple of the transport guys in Ubud who just had signs. One of them had a sign saying "transport" when I said - " no thankyou" he turned if over and it read "maybe tomorrow". (I laughed and told him that was great - and that I would certainly come back to him if I needed transport).
