You can buy a prepaid local sim card to use in your mobiles, so long as they're not locked to an Australian network. We use them every trip to call/text each other while in Bali, call/text people at home, and also to call to make reservations, book drivers etc while over there. I usually stay for a month at a time and still probably only spend $30 total using it all the time while there.
I've never seen prepaid phone cards in Bali.
